Government to reopen Mashava mine

Minister of Mines and Mining Development Winston Chitando says government is working on reopening Mashava Mine before the end of the year.

Addressing parliament yesterday, Minister Chitando said that the ministry is in the process of dewatering the mine with plans afoot to resume operations by December.

The asbestos mine which is part of Shabani Mashava Mine private limited is said to be sitting on $1 billion worth of asbestos deposits.

SMM, which also operates Shabani Mine in Zvishavane shut down its mining operations in 2004 after the Government annexed the assets from businessman Mr Mutumwa Mawere through a reconstruction order, alleging the company was State-indebted and insolvent.
